https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZY6YvE9CsdWNlCt-YFSXVru5--bL3aWyIqUNARSZI2E/edit?usp=sharing Let us know what you would like to see at school. We love to see you at the meetings :) Our next meeting is this Tuesday June 10 at 6:30pm in Downtown Sage Agenda:
From Melissa's E-mail: For our next meeting we will need to discuss the standing committees (Article IX Committees/Coordinators) and do our best to recruit coordinators. 1) Event Coordinator 2) Communications Coordinator 3) Volunteer Coordinator 4) Facilities Assistance Coordinator * Also note on the calendar I shared I did push the monthly meetings with Parent Info (formerly ROI) to 6pm instead of 630pm just in case we have more than a 1/2 hour worth of business on those evenings. Next scheduled mingle is set for: Tuesday, June 10 @ 630pm First official Directors meeting: Tuesday, July 8 @ 630pm Ignite Sage is almost here! We hope to see you there! Below you should find everything you need to know to enjoy the show. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Who: 20 presenters, featuring 2 Sage teachers, 4 parents, and 14 students (ranging from Kindergarten to 9th grade!). What: Ignite/Spark presentations, 20 auto-advancing slides (every 15 seconds for Ignite, 5 seconds for Spark), based on a topic that the speaker is passionate about (see list of topics and descriptions below). Where: The Lincoln Auditorium in the Capitol building. Enter via the stairs adjacent to the sidewalk on 8th street, enter through the glass doors at the base of the staircase, the auditorium is the first room on the left as you enter. Seating in the auditorium is limited to about 244 seats so come early to secure good ones! When: Thursday May 1st 6:00 - 8:00pm Why: Short answer: because it will be awesome! Longer answer: because public speaking is a very important life skill which our students will be honing while simultaneously entertaining and educating us. We will get some insight into the diversity of interests at Sage and learn more about the different facets of our community. What else should I know? Streaming - The event will be live steamed for those who cannot make it down to the Capitol (or friends and family who might live out of the state so they can view the show along with us). Click this link at any time after 6:00pm on the 1st to watch online. No food or uncovered drinks - While you can bring a water bottle (or other covered beverage) with you, there is no food or uncovered drinks allowed in the auditorium. The Capitol is closed during our show - Because the Capitol is closed after 6:00pm when the Legislature is not in session, we will be the only ones in the building. We will need to limit our presence to the West wing of the building, specifically the auditorium, any overflow rooms we may use and the restrooms. Parking - Don't forget that it is First Thursday, so parking may be a bit tougher to come by than on a normal week night. The meters are not in effect after 6:00, and the state lot across 8th street from the Capitol is fair game even without a permit at that time as well. There is also usually parking around Capitol Park and in the lot across 6th Street to the East of the Capitol. Ignite is an audience participation event - Do not hold your applause, cheers, or other encouraging gestures. Ignite is designed to be a very supportive environment and frequent demonstrations of appreciation for the speakers is encouraged (of course, if you notice a speaker being distracted or adversely effected by cheering... then go ahead and wait until they are done). The Presentations (in no particular order): Lions and Tigers and Bears, OH MY! - My Ignite presentation is going to be about how classroom pets make the learning environment better (teacher) Mindset: The Power of Positive Messages - My presentation will be about monitoring your mindset and seeking the right kinds of messages when needed to change mindset from a potentially destructive state to a positive, productive state. I'll use myself as an example of someone who has to take action continuously to seek these messages. I'll also highlight the idea that it is a choice to recognize and pay attention to the positive messages in our environment, and to use them to help us manage our mindset. (teacher) Why is sage weird - I wanted to tell the public the difference between weird and over the top weird with sage (9th grade) Books I Like and Why - As a student reading is important but reading for pleasure is amazing. I want to tell everyone why I love reading and what it offers (2nd grade) How being open minded help us prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse - I want to talk about how you need to be open minded about preparing for disasters, especially the zombie apocalypse (4th grade) The answer to life, the universe and everything: the promise of deep learning - Deep Learning is a new concentration in the field of artificial intelligence that allows computers to learn for themselves. This is different than previous forms of AI, which required continuous human correction for the computer to learn from mistakes. This branch of AI has the potential to do amazing things, beyond recognizing the faces in pictures or speech patterns. If used correctly, Deep Learning could help solve some of humankind's most vexing problems. Of course, there are ethical and moral issues with this kind of artificial intelligence that need to be addressed. (Parent) An insight on the theory of evolution - A look at evidence for evolution and examining its significance in the world. For example, I will explain how artificial selection is a worthy piece of evidence for natural selection (7th grade) Sea Turtles are the Ultimate Risk Takers - I love sea turtles and would like to share about them and how they are great examples of risk takers (Kindergarten) IB learners ASSEMBLE! - highlighting the main IB characteristics of superheroes, 1 hero per learner profile, and why that makes teams like the justice league and the avengers work so well together (Parent) YOU KNOW! FOR KIDS! - I will give reasons and examples for why certain games should not be rated E for everyone. (8th grade) My Mom - My mom lives the IB learner profile (3rd grade) Junk Food… - well, I was going to be talking about how bad junk food is, and why we shouldn't eat it. (5th grade) The effects of music on mind heart and spirit - I love music a lot and there is no better way to express that than this. My idea is to show sientific effects and just how to makes me feel. In some ways music can make us deam and discover new ideas. Plus every song has it's own message and/or story. They may have the same topic but still a diffrent story and tune (5th grade) Empathy (Spark) - Conveying a message of the need to understand others in order to bridge differences, and challenge destructive judgments which limit possibility for finding solutions or getting along with others. Empathy empowers self and others to develop their emotional IQ and leads to genuine cultivation of happiness for self and others (5th grade) Happiness - I would like to draw on my clinical work as a social worker to weave together social/emotional aspects what it means to live a fruitful meaningful life where happiness can be experienced and integrated as a part of our moment by moment awareness. I would touch on how brain research, psychological studies on trauma and suffering, and holistic wellness contain evidence and insights into how humans are wired for relationship and that healing occurs in positive relationships along with self-awareness. Compassion and mindfulness would be part of this conversation as well as providing some take home exercises for the audience (Parent) IB Otters - I would like to do an Ignite Presentation. I will discuss how otters connect to the IB Learner Profiles. Here is an example: Otters are caring because if one gets lost, their entire family will go out to find them. Otters are risk takers because they sometimes have to go under ice to find their food (5th grade) Skiing is Fun - My idea is to do my presentation on skiing because it is something that I have fun with and I can relate to my friends! (7th grade) The Amazing Idea - I’m showing what I do and what I make. Amigurumi (3D crocheted figures). I show the process, where you can get them, and what the ending product looks like. I’ll also include why I make them, what things I’ve made before, how I thought of doing this, why I love to do it, how kids can make money, and why I or other kids need money. (5th grade) He who speaks two languages is worth two people - I want to share through photographs I have taken, particularly while living and traveling abroad, how much richer is my life, how profoundly I have been impacted by being able to speak more than one language. Without my ability to speak other languages, I would be not even half the person I am now, and this I will demonstrate through my slide show. I love languages, and I love helping others realize that they, too, can become bilingual/multilingual. (Parent) Eden Lawrence & her balanced life - Eden will discuss the IB principle of balance and how that applies to her life. (Kindergarten) Sage Community Network Agenda

Sage Community Network
Meeting Minutes October 22, 2013 Present: Soren Jacobsen (President), Petra Schwarthoff (Vice President), Hannah Crumrine (Secretary), Jenean Claus (Event Coordinator), Lael Hansen (General Volunteer Coordinator), Jenny Moorman (ROI Coordinator), Lynn Norton (MHS Community Builder Coordinator), DeAnna Richmond, Chad Alfurel, Lisa Bruner, Veronica Fletcher, Maureen Kuhn, DeAnna Richmond, Rosemarie Schwarzenberger Next meeting: Tuesday, November 26, 2013 @ the Middle / High School Announcements I. None Discussion 1. Scarecrow Stroll update by Jenean Claus a. Jenean thought there was a decent turnout for the Stroll and it was easy to work with the Botanical Garden staff. There didn’t seem to be much of a response from parents on VolunteerSpot. For next year Jenean suggested that the group consider an assignment based approach to designating food or cleanup opportunities. Maybe assignments could be based on grade level or the alphabet. This approach might be helpful to those families needing a little more guidance. Soren commented that last year very few families used VolunteerSpot but there ended up being plenty of food. Jenean and Petra said that was not the case this year and as an example, there was nothing for families to drink. b. Petra suggested there was a communication faux pas with the first announcement about the event. Jenean added that some children showed up with trick or treat bags and expected to receive candy or trinkets. To prevent future communication mishaps Jenean suggested the group rely on just one announcement rather than lots of announcements. There were also some comments from the group that the email link in the announcement was difficult to find and should perhaps be located in a different spot. c. Lael noted that based on her experiences with the Stroll that families get smarter about what to bring or do; there’s a learning curve. d. Soren asked for input about the email families received. It was suggested that the group send separate emails about event. Jenean thought that a poster/flyer with fewer words and more direct information could be emailed to families or printed. Lynne suggested placing important information at top of any email and then follow with more detailed information for those who might interested. Petra commented that she did not get the second email and thought the update only went out through Facebook. There was some discussion about families receiving the newsletter but not the email from MailChimp. Most members present seemed to prefer or appreciate Facebook updates. 2. Community Network Kickoff update by Jenean Claus a. Jenean reminded the group that she is new to the position and might need help with parts of the event. Petra had told her that she needed to think of a theme for the event and she presented the group with three options: 1950s, superheroes, or an international theme. i. Soren suggested that Jenean talk to Keith Donahue (Facilities and Operations) because the school might not want a theme or a costume event. Soren thinks the school wants more of a mixer and is concerned that the theme element is unappealing to some families and thereby affecting attendance. Soren will send email to both Jenean and Keith to make connection. b. Petra talked to Keith and children should not attend the event. It is likely that families can leave children at the Middle / High School for childcare. c. It was mentioned that Lisa Lechner (Business Manager) has been referring to the event as the Fall Parent Social. There was some discussion about what to call the event. It was decided to call it the Community Network Kickoff. Jenean asked whether school administrators and teachers were invited because school emails about the event are specific to parents. d. Jenean will continue working on a DJ and food. e. Jenean asked about the wine drawing and Soren explained how the drawing has worked in the past. Someone asked whether the group should try something other than a wine auction, especially because not all families drink alcohol. Petra suggested a silent auction. Soren said that the school prefers the use of something other than silent auction for fundraising. Soren said that wine auction works well because the prize is big and that a gift basket might not be worth the $20 raffle ticket to some families. Soren suggested talking to Keith before breaking away from a fundraising model that seems to be working. 3. Coffee Hour update by Petra Schwarthoff a. Currently there is no venue for Coffee Hour at the Elementary School and Petra is trying to figure that out. She does not want to offer the gathering at a private residence. Petra is talking with someone from Caffé Capri but nothing has been arranged. The empty bank building is not an option, although the mall might be a consideration in the near future. Petra also mentioned that one mother would like to host an Indian tea morning. 4. Teacher Appreciation a. Neither volunteer coordinator was present to provide an update. b. Petra told the group that she sent each coordinator an email about what went well and what could be improved before the next luncheon. c. Soren explained the process, asked if anyone had not received email about bringing food. d. There was some concern that not all families are receiving emails from MailChimp. Soren said that 670 emails without duplicates. He will reconcile his distribution lists to see what’s going on. 5. Website revision update by Soren Jacobsen a. The ad hoc group moving forward. Lael asked whether families could subscribe to the website. Either Soren or Petra will look into adding subscription capabilities to the updated website. 6. High School Community Building update by Lynn Norton a. The community building group is making progress. Their goal is to develop a high school that looks like a high school rather than a middle or elementary school, which was the original Sage model. b. The survey results are in and the student have selected a phoenix as the school mascot. The school colors might be crimson/red, and maybe green. c. The group is considering moving to a club model with activities every trimester. In addition to the honor society, students have identified three areas of interest. i. A performing arts club with a focus on music, art, and drama. The students would like to attend community events and then meet to talk about the outing and their experiences. Lynne is looking for a parent connected to the art community to help with the club. ii. An international club. iii. A science club. Again, Lynne is looking for interested parents to help develop the clubs. d. The students to want a prom and the group needs to form a committee specific to that event. Additionally, Mrs. Hegg (Middle/High School Director) is researching and collecting information about school memorabilia. e. Chad asked if there was a database for parents to list the resources available to them and could be shared with the school. Petra answered that yes, there is a form on the website asking parents to list the resources they have access to and would be willing to share with the school. The form has not been marketed well but the group updating the website is mindful of changes that need to be made. f. Lael said that elementary school parents might want to help with the high school clubs or other community building activities because their children will probably attend the high school. g. Petra added that with two new school directors there are two separate lines of communication and updates coming from the Elementary School and the Middle / High School. She would like to find a way to bridge that gap so that all families are aware of opportunities for involvement at both schools. 7. Soren turned the time over the guest speaker because the group was running behind schedule. If time allowed, the group would discuss the remaining agenda items after the ROI presentation. 8. Ignite Sage update by Soren Jacobsen 9. Topic selection for monthly Return on Investment presentations 10. Junior Achievement Sage teachers and administrators work hard to give our kids a world-class education - literally! Parents are always welcome to help and the Sage Community Network, the school's parent-teacher organization, invites you to our next meeting Tuesday October 22nd at the Middle/High school.
We will cover our Community Network business from about 6:00 to 6:30 and then we will have a presentation by Jennifer Poole on Fostering conflict competency: Peer mediation skills for students. Jennifer is a Certified Professional Mediator and Adjunct Professor at Boise State University teaching Dispute Resolution. Jennifer created and implemented the peer mediation model utilized in the Boise School District. Students who develop effective conflict management skills possess tools to further their development as IB learners. This is a great opportunity for us, as parents, to learn about these methods and how we can help foster their use in our children. Dates for upcoming SCN activities: Oct. 22nd 6:00pm: SCN meeting and Conflict Compentency/Peer Mediation overview Nov.13th: Next Teacher Appreciation lunch Nov. 15th: Sage Parent Social at the Mardi Gras Nov. 19th: Tentative date for November SCN meeting Dec 17th: Tentative date for December SCN meeting |
